This chapter is fun mostly because of what it hints at. Admittedly I can see it being fairly uninteresting on a first read, but there are some very important things hinted at. For perhaps the least exciting, the introduction of Cheeter and Owen (though he isn’t named yet) is mostly just in the same vein as the previous introductions from the past few chapters. Owen is somewhat intriguing if you’re familiar with what harvesting mistletoe with a sickle might imply, but otherwise it’s more of the same. Going further, the confirmation that those who chased Snuff and Jack in the last chapter are ‘a dour detective and his rotund companion’ is a rather piquant note most should be able to pick up on and perhaps the first real sign that familiar characters will be showing up [Footnote 1]. Finally, the mention of a pawprint found by Jack’s house coupled with the howl of ‘lost’ in the canine language is very important, though not for obvious reasons at the time. That’s just one to keep in mind as the story continues, especially if you do a little bit of math with which night it is.
Footnote 1: Arguably most people can probably pick up on who the Count is, just by that title and his bat familiar. But that could just be a reference at this point, like how Jill only really fills the witch archetype without actually matching any specific character [Footnote 1A]. And while Jack is very much that Jack, it isn’t exactly obvious to pick up on if you aren’t looking for it. But these two are incredibly who you think they would be.
Footnote 1A: We~ll. Kind of. I’m ignoring the silly little twist at the end.
