Alright. So I know I said donuts, but the mini-project is more important. So October is swiftly coming. And some of you may know what that means, for an appreciator of somewhat old literature. To the uninitaited, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to ‘A Night in the Lonesome October’, by Roger Zelazny of ‘The Chronicles f Amber’ fame. If my word holds any stock to you — which, granted, I am just some random guy on the internet — then I’d recommend this book to you. I’ll give a more detailed write up as well [Footnote 1], but for now I’ll just say that it’s one of my favorite books. But the important part is the book’s structure. IT’s written such that each chapter is one night in the month of October. So, for some fans of the book, there’s a tradition of reading the book each year, one chapter a day. And I’d like to invite you, whoever you may be, to join me in a little online book-club this year doing just that. Since I’m doing it anyway, this seems like a good chance for me to try and spread awareness of a great book. So with that being said — and if you care — I will be posting a brief thought of the day after reading each chapter, once October starts. And as for why I’m posting this announcement so early… well, it is a bit of an older book and might not be the easiest to come by. Figured I’d give anyone interested a fair amount of time to get ready.
And with that being sad, have some donuts:
Homemade, maple [Footnote 3], and baked instead of fried for my own sanity’s sake. They came out a little bit crumbly because I was a little rushed in getting them from pan to cooling rack and the maple glaze has somewhat absorbed in, since this picture is a few days after baking. But they were good nonetheless. As for the recipes I used, the donut itself came from the King Arthur Flour website [Footnote 4] and I think it strikes a good balance between ease of baking and end result. As for the maple glaze, it came from… uh… this website [Footnote 5]. Don’t have much to say on that, except that it makes me want to make more maple flavored things.
