This chapter is rather interesting because it’s the first time the terminology of the Game proper is used. The chapter itself is fairly uneventful; mostly just a few pieces of administrative work, so to speak. It introduces Needle, and by extension the Count who one can make assumptions on given Needle is a bat; it is the first time another character is mentioned, though not by name, and establishes their part in the events; and it offers more of a firm conclusion that Crazy Jill is less crazy and more magically inclined, so to speak. But the conversation between Needle and Snuff is the first mention of both the Game — capital ‘G’ noteworthy — and players and Snuff’s narration afterward is the first time openers and closers are mentioned, though without the context to understand which he and Jack are. All in all, another nice slow build of the foundational concepts. Especially since it’s another two pages (approximately).
